This inspiring Tanzanian safari takes you deep into the heart of the magnificent Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania. Remote, personal and tranquil, the Selous is one of our favourite safari destinations in East Africa. Enjoy four nights to relax and unwind in a peaceful part of the reserve in an authentic tented camp, Selous Serena Camp.

Zanzibar’s coastline offers some of the best beaches in the world, but sand and surf vary depending on what side of the island you’re on. On the east coast, waves break over coral reefs and sand bars offshore and low tide reveals small pools of starfish, small minnows, and anemones. Up north, ocean swimming is much less susceptible to the tides, and smooth beaches and white sand make for dazzling days in the sun.
You are met on arrival into Dar es Salaam and are driven to the domestic terminal. You will then board your scheduled light aircraft flight and fly directly to Stielger’s Gorge in the Selous. Your guide will meet you at the airstrip and drive you to Selous Serena Camp. Your stay is for the following four nights with all meals, drinks, conservation fees and shared safari activities are included. On offer to you are game drives, river cruises and walking safaris.
Today you will have your first full day on safari in the Selous. Activities are usually arranged the previous night so you can decide what you would like to do on a daily basis. This is a great way of arranging your safari and gives you a great deal of flexibility. In the Selous, you have the option of a bush walk, game drive or boat safari. The reserve boasts good numbers of lion, elephant, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, impala, eland as well as the elusive leopard and wild dog.
You have two safari activities available to you on each full day and these depart in the morning and afternoon. Apart from December & January when the weather is extremely hot, we’d recommend getting out and about on foot in the Selous so you can truly appreciate the wilderness.
Your final full day on safari in the Selous. Keep an eye out for the extremely rare, and highly mobile, packs of African wild dog. The vast size of the Selous, roughly equivalent to Switzerland, is the perfect environment for wild dog, one of the animal kingdom’s most successful hunters. Dogs hunt with a success rate of around 80% due largely to their intelligence and teamwork. Comparatively, lions hunt with a success rate of around 30% when in prides and about 10% when alone.
Today you will can have your morning safari activity before you are driven back to the airstrip for your scheduled light aircraft flight to Zanzibar. You are met on arrival in Zanzibar and are driven to your beach accommodation, which is Unguja Lodge on the southern tip of the Island. Most parts of the island take around an hour to drive to from the airport. The northern tip of the island, the Nungwi area, usually takes a little bit longer. You will check-in to your hotel where you stay for the next five nights on half board basis.
